Summary:

  • IEEE Day is October 7, 2025.
  • Events are planned from Oct. 5 to Oct. 18.
  • Volunteer-led initiative brings together people from more than 100 countries.
  • Use the hashtag #IEEEDay2025 to share your experiences and connect.

On October 7, IEEE members around the world will come together for IEEE Day 2025, a global celebration that connects local IEEE communities in a massive, volunteer-led event. With more than 1,000 online and in-person events planned from October 5 through 18, organizers expect participants from more than 100 countries.

For IEEE Day 2025 Chair Abdul Halik M I, it’s a day that “shows the true power of IEEE, breaking down barriers of geography and culture and bringing everyone together with a shared vision of advancing technology for humanity.”

Volunteers from across the world are planning everything from student robotics demonstrations to guest speaker presentations and technical workshops. Each event reflects what matters most to that particular community, whether it’s showcasing cutting-edge research or teaching fundamental engineering concepts.

You can see the full list of events on the IEEE Day website. Be sure to check out the photography competition and use the hashtag #IEEEDay2025 to connect and share your experiences. The contests document these diverse celebrations and the collaborative spirit of IEEE’s members.

Abdul, who has been an IEEE member for over a decade, has been part of the committee that organizes IEEE Day since 2020, and he’s seen how it creates connections that last long after October 7.

He says that volunteers are at the heart of the event.

“Every effort matters,” Abdul said. “Whether you host a small workshop or a large conference, you are part of the heartbeat of IEEE Day. You may never fully realize how many lives you touch, but know that your efforts are shaping the future of IEEE and leaving an impact that goes far beyond one day.”

Here, he discusses why IEEE is important to him and why he devotes his time to making this massive global project come to life.

What inspired you to become involved with the IEEE Day team?

My inspiration to join the IEEE Day team came from my own journey with IEEE. Back in 2016, when I first volunteered as an IEEE Day Ambassador, I experienced the energy of connecting with people from across the world through a single celebration.

Over the years, as I took up different roles in IEEE and IEEE Day, I kept coming back to that feeling of community and collaboration. Becoming part of the global IEEE Day team felt like the perfect way to give back and to help create for others the same sense of belonging, inspiration and growth that I personally experienced.

What kind of impact do you hope IEEE Day has?

For me, IEEE Day is about creating sparks, sparks of inspiration and empowerment. I hope students, young professionals and seasoned members alike leave IEEE Day not only motivated but also with a renewed sense of possibility.

I’ve seen student branches use IEEE Day as the launchpad for year-long initiatives, and volunteers who meet at IEEE Day events later collaborate on international projects. That’s the impact I want to see: turning the excitement of a single day into a ripple effect of innovation, leadership and lifelong global friendships.

Can you give us a sense of the scale of coordinating this global event?

Coordinating IEEE Day is like managing a global festival powered entirely by volunteers. In 2024, we saw more than 1,000 activities across 100+ countries, each unique to its community, yet all united under one theme. It’s a huge responsibility, aligning across time zones, languages and expectations, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve spent late nights supporting teams across regions, only to wake up hours later to see photos and stories of their successful events. This is made possible by the passion of volunteers, from Ambassadors to Section leaders, who pour their hearts into the celebration. To me, it feels less like work and more like being part of a worldwide family reunion where everyone contributes their own melody to a larger symphony.

Do you have any special memories of past events?

One of my earliest memories was in 2016, when as an IEEE ambassador, I organized a small campus activity and was amazed at how even a modest event created a sense of connection to a global celebration. In more recent years, I’ve witnessed incredible moments, like watching events being streamed live simultaneously from different continents. I recall a student branch leader once telling me that IEEE Day helped her find a mentor, and today she is leading major initiatives. Stories like these stay with me because they reflect how IEEE Day transforms lives in unexpected ways. For me, the most special memories come from seeing young members step into leadership roles for the first time, and realizing they are not alone; they have a global network cheering them on.
