Laundry can be daunting. Sorting colors and fabrics and actually tossing clothes into the washer and then to the dryer are only part of the battle. Folding is the real fuss. The wrong approach could leave clothes wrinkled or frayed. And, as we learned at CES 2018, there’s a solution for that. A couple, in fact: FoldiMate and Laundroid.

The clue for FoldiMate is really in the word — it’s not fancy, and it doesn’t store your clothes, it folds them. Almost like one of those commercial-style conveyor belt toasters, you feed the FoldiMate a shirt, it goes through the conveyer, and comes out in a drawer, perfectly folded. The demo showed the prototype processing and folding items of all sizes and colors, with the entire process for several shirts taking less than a couple of minutes. It’s not pretty, but it doesn’t need to be, as its design makes it a perfect complement to the appliances already in your laundry room.

Laundroid is a bit different. First of all, it’s sleek. While you could feasibly store it in a laundry room, it’s also sharp enough to be treated like a piece of functional furniture. Similar to FoldiMate, it takes clothes in, and folds them, but its key differentiators are that it stores them until you’re ready to retrieve your clothes, has an app (for fans of Clueless, this may be a dream come true — you can organize your clothes as part of a digital bureau), and even responds to voice commands.
