Intelligent transportation innovations are on the rise, and while autonomy continues to play a significant role in the industry’s growth and potential, it’s hard to ignore the advances in smart and sustainable transportation.

According a recent article on Gizmodo, two companies in the Netherlands – an energy company called Eneco and VIVENS, a rail company – have partnered to transform the way electric railways operate in the Netherlands, with plans to have trains run only on wind power within the next three years.

The partnership extends beyond the Netherlands, with wind power coming from nearby Scandinavian nations, as well as Belgium. Sourcing energy abroad will also help to promote adoption of this renewable energy initiative throughout Europe.

Wind power continues to grow in popularity, and according to the article, the International Energy Council predicts that wind power could eventually account for 18% of all energy production across the globe.

Wind power packs the potential to power much more than railways. In fact, Eneco is also working with Google as part of a 10-year deal to fully power its data center by wind.

While it’s tough to say whether or not you’ll be able to spot wind farms near you soon, it’s exciting to explore the potential power solutions offered from renewable resources.
