A presentation on security in 15 minutes? Not quite a world record, but pretty close. IEEE Member and Chair of IEEE’s Public Visibility Committee, Diogo Monica stepped on the Enterprise stage at Web Summit to speak about the security landscape.
Considering the mixed audience at Web Summit – some super-technical and others not so much – Diogo compared celebrity endorsements of consumer goods to the rising trend of tech celebrities endorsing security solutions.
Open source and cloud platforms have forced a shift in security, ultimately pushing security into a state of commoditization. Open source solutions have been used by major companies — Google, Netflix, Facebook, Square and Docker being just a handful.
The security landscape is still very vulnerable, as Monica points out. In fact, his closing line re-likened the industry to Hollywood, saying that “when it comes to security, read the tabloids.”
