If it was a big machine, a young Aiyappan Pillai would be fascinated. Trains, trucks, ships, construction equipment — that’s what Pillai paid attention to.

But in the sixth grade he took a class on hobby electronics. He learned to make printed circuit boards and assemble radios.

“My curiosity and interest in electronics grew,” he said. “That was the spark that led me to a degree in electronics and communications engineering.”

Today, Pillai, an IEEE Senior Member, runs his own consulting business with a focus on services in the infrastructure and communications technology.

What lessons did your first job offer that you rely on today?

My first job was with an integrated power utility company in India. It wasn’t in my direct line of qualification, but I learned valuable lessons.

  1. Successful outcomes depend on having the right structures and processes in place.
  2. Cross-functional teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential, underscoring the critical role people play in the success of any organization.
  3. Clear and consistent documentation helps reduce operational friction, preserve knowledge and maintain consistency over time.

Can you tell us about your career path?

I built my career by successfully delivering on the tasks I was entrusted with. That led to bigger projects, with more planning and execution in each new project.

From installation and operationalization of submarine cable systems as an engineer, I progressed into leading teams with multiple specialties and functions for the deployment of very large infrastructure projects, like technical infrastructure for India’s National Senior Citizen Helpline and broadband WiFi in over 3,500 rural railway stations.

What advice would you give the next generation?

I do not think there is a formula. I believe that one must identify a broad purpose and be open to the option of fulfilling it through multiple pathways.

It’s very important to be guided by the fundamental principles of honesty, integrity and ethics. Flexibility and adaptability enable one to handle the uncertainties in any domain. There is something to learn in every situation, whether it is a success, a failure or even something negative.

All said, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each one must adapt to their context and life experiences, while adhering to the fundamental principles of right conduct.
