As technology infiltrates all aspects of our daily life, law enforcement agencies are looking towards digital devices, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to help fight and solve crime.

Many of the devices in our homes are tracking what we say, where we are and when we are using them. This “digital evidence” can give law enforcement valuable intel into the whereabouts of a suspect. Other technologies that can aid police are GPS projectiles, smart sensors and body cameras. The GPS projectiles can be shot to attach to a suspect’s car, helping police avoid a dangerous high speed chase by knowing the car’s location. Smart sensors can be inserted inside an officer’s gun to track the usage and body cameras can record interactions that may provide evidence in a case.

Machine learning and AI can also be used to predict human behavior and the probability of a person committing another crime. Using algorithms and prediction tools can be helpful but also can carry biases since they are programmed by humans. Other concerns could be the invasion of privacy and protection of data when the digital devices are given to the police. There is no doubt that this will be a hotly debated subject well into the future.
