With new smart home technologies and devices infiltrating our everyday lives, it makes sense that companies are working to add functionality to allow devices to interact with each other. While some smart home devices have control over lighting and others can adjust the temperature in our homes, this latest collaboration can actually help save lives.

Nest’s smart home smoke detector now has the ability to connect with GE’s smart ovens. This means that your smoke detector will be able to send an alert if you have left the house with the oven on, possibly preventing a fire. No longer will you have that nagging feeling when you aren’t sure if you’ve turned off the oven. Since the Nest Protect knows when the house is empty, it will automatically send an alert to your smartphone if the oven is still on. This update is a step in the right direction, and makes connected homes — and devices, in this case — more appealing. The Nest has also paired with a connected heating system from Rheem that turns off the system if it detects smoke or carbon monoxide. It’s likely that other IoT products will follow suit, making the future of connected homes smarter, and safer.
