If you wanted more proof that AI technologies are the wave of the future, The White House issued a report this week called “Preparing For The Future of Artificial Intelligence.” Advances in AI have already created many more opportunities in various fields and while the government recognizes this, they know there is a need for more oversight and policy.
The report showcases the many benefits to advances in AI and makes the case for creating standards for its use in aviation and finance, as well as for regulating autonomous cars and drones. The government wants industries to engage in dialogues about advances in AI, including the dangers associated with the new technologies. As with all new transformative technology, there are many questions on how to regulate AI in terms of jobs, the economy and safety.
The report recognizes the concern about jobs in particular, and suggests conducting a study commissioned by the office of the President. It also explores how public policy can address these risks, and ways that workers whose jobs may be affected by AI can be retrained to succeed in an industry or role that does not compete with AI.
Transportation is another field that the report focuses on. With an increase in future advances in AI affecting road and air transportation, the Department of Transportation needs to be involved. Sharing data for purposes of safety and research is necessary as the technologies evolve to make sure that the roads and sky are safe for future generations.
This report is a great step forward in better integrating technology in communities across the country. IEEE has introduced a Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in the Design of Autonomous Systems as they see AI as the technology of the future, as well. Results point to a promising future, highlighting the potential for strong economic growth and social progress as a result of an AI-enhanced future.
