Waste Segregation and Information System

Our system segregates different types of materials from and send the information of waste on your smartphone through bluetooth so that it can be collected easily and can be recycled.


The Purpose

There is a need for more modern collecting and transport infrastructure, despite its high costs, and modern sorting technology which has become invaluable. Disposal technology, such as landfill and incineration, also has its cost. It reduces the need for waste disposal and demand for raw materials by different industries. The purpose of this project is to develop a novel method of detection and segregation of paper, metal, and non-metals (including plastics) from the waste that is generally thrown into a dustbin and to intimate the concerned authorities using Bluetooth communication mode about the each category of waste collected.

The Technology

A novel method is developed in which three types of waste can be detected and segregated, namely metals, plastics and paper. The inductive proximity sensor is used to detect ferrous and non-ferrous metals. High speed blower and if-else logic is used for paper and plastic detection respectively. Bluetooth Terminal application installed in a Smart phone is used to receive data about waste collected . Finally, the whole mechanism is integrated into a regular dustbin, a code is developed and implemented using Arduino IDE and Arduino Mega 2560 board respectively and system is tested for various waste materials.

Additional Details

Sliding and Hinged gates are developed and used in this project for the segregation purpose. Till now, many Smart bins have been developed for this purpose but segregation space of all of them was horizontal which increases the size of such systems and limits the number of places where it can be used on a daily basis. We have tried to make the segregation space vertical so that it can be used in the place of regular dustbin with much more efficiency, at almost all the places.
