Robotic Inspection Platform - Smartphone Controlled RC Car

MAKERS: Tom COUNTRY: United Kingdom

A smartphone controlled RC car, which reports sensor data and video data back to the smartphone. Designed for my A-Level Computing project as a ventilation duct inspection tool.

The Purpose

The Robotic Inspection Platform (RIP) is a wheel based robot designed for inspecting ventilation shafts too small for humans to fit into. It comes equipped with a number of sensors including; a FPV (First Person View) camera, thermometer, hygrometer, carbon monoxide sensor and a LDR based light sensor. It is controlled using standard Android devices which have support for Bluetooth and WiFi, which is all devices as Google's android Compatibility Definition Document states that handheld android devices should have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities.

The Technology

The Controller with a Display was done using an Android Smartphone. The control data is streamed over Bluetooth using the RFCOMM protocol. The video from the camera is transmitted via WLAN. The Android app to do all this was created in Java using Android Studio. The RC car was made using the chassis of an existing RC car and replacing all of the onboard electronics with and Arduino Nano microcontroller and a number of various components which enabled the microcontroller to interface with the chassis' motors as well as an HC-06 Bluetooth transceiver for data I/O.
