Q: What inspired you to become an engineer? Were you always interested in technology? If so, why? If not, when did you become interested and why?
A: I’m not an engineer, but I play one on TV. My formal training is in chemistry (and music), but I’ve been immersed in technology from a young age. As a kid I listened to an old tube radio that received shortwave bands, before college I did audio production and slide show programming, and my lifelong pursuit of music has exposed me to a wide variety of technologies, particularly MIDI and then digital audio. As a chemist, I mixed potions and cloned genes, but was smitten by the internet in the early 90s and ended up changing careers to digital media and emerging technology.
