While virtual reality is often discussed in a consumer entertainment context, advanced professional applications are being developed as well. For example, IEEE member Anderson Maciel at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) is working on computer-simulated surgery in virtual reality. Since complex surgeries can take tremendously long to learn, his team is helping experienced surgeons train faster and plan specialized surgeries for each patient, which helps improve health outcomes and access to care.
