Wireless Microcontrolled EOG Mouse Pointer

MAKERS: Nayana

This project presents a wireless mouse pointer microcontrolled by eye movement. A electrooculogram (EOG) and a microcontrolled system with wireless communication were developed to serve as mouse pointer in order to help people with physical disability. The EOG was implemented with reduced circuitry using only electrodes and instrumentation amplifier for signal acquisition using just one CI LM324. A PIC microcontroller together with one MRF24J was used to get a low cost platform. A low profile PCB was assembled and tested in UFERSA (Federal University of the Semiarid Region) Electronics Lab. This project was done as a undergraduate student project. The EOG Mouse Pointer has the main goal to help people that lost his upper body movements or that have some difficult to use them due to physical disability. This project can improve the experience of this people with digital world. The EOG Mouse Pointer was tested using just oscilloscope to measure signal amplitudes and pulse widths in order to generate a good and calibrated algorithm to program the PIC microcontroller. The MiWi protocol was also used and MRF24J was responsible for wireless communication with computer desktop or laptop at 2.4 GHz. The tests presented good sensitivity for the pointer movement in a laptop as a response of eye movement. The tests were done with some volunteers and the algorithm has support for all mouse pointer movements (right and left, up and down) and clicks.
