Radiometric point level detection

Geiger-Mueller counter for point level detection, that even under extreme process conditions like high pressure, temperature, corrosiveness, toxicity and abrasion, the radiometric measuring principle can be employed without any problems.

The Purpose

Some industrial processes such as ammonia production, among other processes generate hazardous byproducts or are in the midst of a hazardous environment within their storage locations so they are difficult to measure their liquid level. Therefore, it is necessary the use of a measurement that can be done without entering any device in the storage of the product and also immune to their production conditions . The radiometric measurement responds to this problem because the measurement is made from the outside of the storage place, without contact with the product, and maintenance and risk free.

The Technology

This early prototype uses a Geiger-Muller tube is used as sensor, together with its biasing circuit and output pulse shaping circuit, which delivers a pulse for each count of radiation that comes from the source at the other side. By using these pulses, an Arduino UNO board, is used as data acquisition for measure of the radiation received from signal conditioning, and this last is received from sensor. The level measurement is performed when the sensor detects a change in the radiation received.

Additional Details

The Arduino UNO is connected via USB port to a personal computer that is programmed to work as a virtual instrument; the computer can be programmed to control pumps, motors ... according to the measured level of liquid. When the liquid is below (0) the radiation beam sensor, the measurement is higher (1) than when the liquid passes over the sensor.
