Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

MAKERS: Umair Asif

Design and development of a Low Cost Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for the purpose of visual inspection in an underwater environment. We are a team of final year electrical engineering students. This Autonomous Underwater vehicle has been designed from scratch including its acrylic based mechanical structure. It can take high definition stills and record videos underwater, all electronics are housed in a waterproofed hull. The vehicle designed is completely autonomous and does not require any sort of external control (i.e through remote control or wireless communication link). Once it completes its mission (i.e after following a particular path) it resurfaces to a point. Recorded media stored inside the computer's memory can then be accessed and viewed on a PC. A unique feature of this AUV is its low cost, the total costs of this vehicle approximate to $1400 only. This is an untethered underwater vehicle with an onboard power supply, an embedded computer system and a network of dedicated sensors and actuators. Data from various sensor devices is routed to the computer system in real time to achieve the objective of following a path in an underwater environment, in empirical terms path following will entail following a pipeline underwater through use of underwater cameras and application of image processing algorithms. The vehicle designed will however be also able to follow a predefined path underwater for the purpose of underwater surveillance.
