The Titan's Li Fi

MAKERS: Shighil

The Titans: Arun Shajan, Shighil P, Sreejith T K, Vishnu Divakar We are a bunch of young innovator from India trying to take engineering and technology to a new level. This is our second attempt to do something very different first being the 'Ikeyboard'(posted in this site before). Li Fi is one among the concepts associated with the so called 5G which is going to make a lot of fuss once it is released or may be it would come only with 6 G. Let?s just watch out for that when it happens. Li Fi is advocated to an alternate to Wi Fi, which is very common nowadays. But it?s got its own issues. Security, availability (hospitals, inside a plane and many other sensitive areas), spectrum limitation are a few of them. Let?s speak of an alternative to this RF waves which Wi Fi uses its medium which is light. It?s got 10000 X bandwidth of RF. This means 10000 X opportunities and possibilities and an enormously big figure to explain speed of transmission which could probably be in GHz range. Well that's all for intro. For those who would like to know more about what Li Fi is and what all can it do just Google it. Now to my project, it?s a prototype of a Li Fi based communication system. We have managed to send data from one PC to another using Li Fi system that we have built. It works very similar to Wi Fi and Bluetooth at the front end. But working mechanism is very different. Since Li Fi has got no fixed protocol as such, we did the project using other standard protocols. I am not getting into the technical stuffs. In simple context, we have 2 computers and we designed a UI (user interface) for this. In this UI, we have got an option to option to select the file (specify the name of the file) that we like to have on our computer from the other computer. It?s more like downloading a file from a server computer. File can be anything. Text, video, audio, image and so on. Similar to sending files over Wi Fi, difference being the use of visible light over the RF waves. We can also make the system to data bi-directionally i.e. in both directions. It?s done through pairing mechanism. After pairing you can send continuously between these computers. Both computers can send and receive data through this network. This opens up the opportunity to transfer internet through light. We are working on it. It?s challenging considering the fact that our system is really far from actually attaining that GHz speed. Well we did our best with the limited amount of resources which we have.
